From filmmaker Ric Burns comes this extraordinary documentary recounting the story of legendary neurologist Oliver Sacks. The film celebrates a fearless explorer of unknown cognitive worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind while providing us with an understanding of the personal battles that were being waged with drug addiction, homophobia, a recalcitrant medical establishment that would only come to accept his work decades after the fact. Included are exclusive interviews with Sacks conducted just weeks after he received a terminal diagnosis and nearly two dozen deeply revealing and personal interviews with family members, colleagues, patients and close friends.

Tribeca Talks At Home will mark the 30th anniversary of the film AWAKENINGS with a conversation with Robert De Niro (who played the lead role of Leonard Lowe), Kate Edgar (Oliver Sacks’ long-time editor, friend and colleague), Walter Parkes (the film’s producer), and Ric Burns (the director of the new documentary, OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE).

in conversation with Eugene Hernandez, director of the New York Film Festival.

Kate Edgar began working with Oliver Sacks as editor and researcher in 1983. She contributed to all sixteen of his books, including the recently published Everything in its Place. Over three decades, she traveled the world with Dr. Sacks and knew many of his patients and subjects.

Bill Hayes, the partner of the late Oliver Sacks, is a writer and photographer. His books include Insomniac City: New York, Oliver, and Me, and How We Live Now: Scenes from the Pandemic. He has also served as a co-editor of Dr. Sacks' posthumous books.

Eugene Hernandez is the Director of the New York Film Festival (NYFF). Before that he served as Film at Lincoln Center’s deputy executive director, joining the organization in 2010 as its director of digital strategy. He is the co-founder of the film industry website IndieWire.
